The changing nature of AI writing
Today, the challenge isn’t detecting AI writing itself. Turnitin’s ability to distinguish human writing from AI-generated writing remains accurate, but AI refinement tools have blurred the distinction between AI-generated and AI-modified text.
A student can prompt a publicly available LLM to write an assignment, then refine that content with another AI tool until many of the original AI signals begin to fade. And these capabilities aren’t confined to dedicated AI “humanizer” or bypassing tools; they’re built into many of the writing platforms students use every day.
As AI becomes a standard part of modern writing workflows, our technology has to reflect that reality. That’s why we’re updating what you see in our AI writing reports.
Instead of flagging potentially AI-generated and AI-modified content separately, we’re combining them into a single, cohesive view.
How is Turnitin’s AI writing report changing?
Turnitin’s AI writing report is replacing the previous two-color highlight system with a single, unified blue highlight for all likely AI-generated and AI-modified content.
Previously, the report split insights into two separate categories: potential AI-generated content highlighted in blue, and potential AI-modified content highlighted in purple.
Moving forward, users will see a single blue highlight across all likely AI-generated writing, regardless of whether the text was copied directly from an LLM or run through secondary AI paraphrasing and bypassing tools.1

Turnitin is updating its AI writing report to consolidate insights into a simpler, unified format that reduces the risk of overinterpretation.
As AI writing and AI modification tools have become increasingly integrated into everyday writing workflows, separating AI-generated and AI-modified content into distinct categories no longer provides the most meaningful picture.
We’re simplifying the report to reduce the risk of misleading conclusions while preserving the insights educators and other users need to make informed decisions. In conversation with educators and researchers alike, we consistently hear that clarity and accuracy matter most, and this update reflects that feedback.
Does Turnitin’s update to the AI writing report mean it is harder to detect AI-generated content?
No. Turnitin’s AI writing detection capabilities will continue to detect content likely generated by AI. This includes text that may have been paraphrased or run through AI bypassing tools to evade detection.
Who is affected by Turnitin’s AI writing report update, and do I need to do anything?
Turnitin’s AI writing report update will be applied automatically for all customers who currently license Turnitin Originality or iThenticate with AI writing detection capabilities enabled.
AI writing reports generated prior to this update will continue to show the two-color segmentation. For an updated report to be generated, these prior submissions will need to be re-submitted.
What remains the same
What has not changed is that AI detection tools are an important, but only one, piece of the puzzle. We share with our customers that AI writing scores should start conversations between educators and students, or publishers and researchers. They should not be the sole basis for any integrity decision.
