O’Fallon Township High School doubles down on learning integrity

Turnitin Clarity brings visibility into the end-to-end writing process

Unrelenting progress in generative AI poses a new challenge for educators. There is real and valid tension in evaluating if and how AI should play a role in assignments, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. As tools capable of producing human-sounding text become commonplace, the question becomes: how do you create a path for the responsible use of AI in assignments?

That path starts with a new standard, one that modernizes the “show your work” concept for the AI era. This shift requires visibility into the entire writing journey, not just the final submission. Without that transparency, teachers risk grading writing they can’t verify as a student’s own work, losing insight into how students develop as independent thinkers and writers.

Forward-thinking schools are already adapting. O’Fallon Township High School — recognized as a leading school by the U.S. Department of Education — is among the trailblazers. O’Fallon’s leadership saw the AI wave approaching and moved quickly to restore visibility to the classroom.

I think we’re all concerned as educators that students will stop developing as independent thinkers.

Challenge

Lacking visibility into students’ writing process

As AI tools became more sophisticated, O’Fallon Township High School noticed several emerging pain points:

  • Verifying that students’ work reflected their original thinking
  • Having eyes on the submitted product, but not the process behind it
  • Understanding where individual students needed stronger support
  • Detecting AI-assisted writing that looked convincingly human
  • Preserving trust between teachers, students, and parents

As a long-time Turnitin customer, the school already used Turnitin Feedback Studio with Turnitin Originality to perform similarity checks (reviewing other sources for matching text) and authorship checks (verifying the student's writing style). But even with these strong insights, the rise of generative AI meant they couldn’t see how students created their writing. Drafting behaviors, active writing time, and genuine cognitive effort were becoming increasingly difficult to discern.

Beyond the volume of grading, O’Fallon educators struggled with the validity of the content. Providing detailed feedback on AI-generated output drains morale and is a missed opportunity for learning. The faculty needed to ensure that their limited time was spent nurturing authentic student thought.

At the institutional level, leaders worried that a widening gap between traditional writing instruction and AI-assisted workflows threatened students’ development as thinkers and communicators.

The next step was clear: O’Fallon needed to implement a solution that created a window into the writing process. Doing so became a central focus of O’Fallon’s collaborative work with Turnitin.

Solution

A window into the writing journey

To gain full transparency into how students created their writing, the school implemented Turnitin Clarity. The solution became part of a three-pronged Turnitin ecosystem for a 360-degree view of process, integrity, and quality, with all insights in one place:

  • Turnitin Feedback Studio for reliable grading and streamlined feedback
  • Turnitin Originality to establish the authenticity of writing
  • Turnitin Clarity for writing process transparency

“It’s a complete product that gives us every angle that we need, both to guide students in what they’re writing, but also to keep a pulse on integrity,” Jennifer says.

This ecosystem allows the district to focus immediately on writing process transparency, while laying the foundation to introduce responsible AI tools in the future as their institutional policies evolve.

Results

Classroom impact: authentic writing, stronger skills, and restored confidence

In teachers’ hands, Turnitin Clarity has strengthened the connection between educators and student work. Instead of evaluating a static document, teachers follow the complete video playback of a work’s development. The Writing Report removes any ambiguity from the conversation. The data provides a neutral, objective view of the writing process, allowing teachers to address integrity issues with confidence and speed. This educator-focused design allows them to identify areas where students need more support and develop deeper critical thinking and argumentation skills.

“With Turnitin Clarity’s playback feature, you can review the entire writing process. You can print a report showing where copy and pasting took place, staple it to the student’s paper, and hand it back with a polite, ‘If you have any questions, let me know,’” says O’Fallon teacher Sarah Harms. “One of the best parts is that it preserves your relationship with students.”

The impact on classroom culture is transformative. At the start of assignments, Sarah shares previous Turnitin Clarity Writing Reports to set expectations and make transparency the norm. Students now understand that their visible process must match their submitted work.

“The first time students see that pasting is captured, it’s an eye-opener,” she says. “It dissuades them from being anything but honest.”

Turnitin Clarity has also strengthened learning outcomes. Because teacher feedback played a significant role in its development, educators find the platform highly intuitive for their day-to-day assignments. Teachers can distinguish struggling writers from reluctant ones and provide targeted support.

“Because my students are doing their own work now, they are undoubtedly becoming better writers,” Sarah notes. “One student started asking me for help when he had never done so before. For the first time, he was truly engaging in the writing process, and I could assess his needs.”

Institutional impact: transparency, trust, and integrity

Turnitin Clarity provided O’Fallon with a process that would restore trust between students and educators.

“We very much want to see our students’ originality blossom. We want to see their own thoughts, their own creative nature come out, and that is what Turnitin Clarity allows,” says Jennifer.

Turnitin Clarity helps the school uphold its mission to develop independent thinkers, while supporting district-wide AI and integrity policy. Most importantly, it helps them focus on what really matters: developing students’ skills.

“Turnitin Clarity is proof of process,” adds Jennifer. “It gives us a window into how students are evolving and gives us an opportunity to give a great deal of individual input to our students based on their individual process.”

Now, they have a fully established show-your-work writing culture, where authenticity is visible, expectations are clear, and students take ownership of their learning.

Seeing everything, trusting everything

Turnitin Clarity’s impact was clear from day one, and only gets stronger.

  • Greater transparency and renewed trust: Turnitin Clarity provides a clear record of the writing process, restoring trust between teachers and students.
  • Time savings for educators: “Academic integrity issues used to absorb a lot of teachers’ time, but Turnitin Clarity empowers them by giving that time back, and that’s the largest return,” Jennifer says.
  • Stronger writing development: Students at all levels — from struggling writers to budding scholars — are building stronger analytical skills and authentic writing voices.
  • Schoolwide growth: Adoption is spreading as teachers see consistent, undeniable results.
  • Happier, more confident students: “Not every kid is the strongest writer, but Turnitin Clarity gives them a tool to shore up the way that they write in an environment where there are guardrails,” Sarah says. “That’s priceless.”

Two decades helping teachers safeguard learning

O’Fallon’s relationship with Turnitin spans more than 20 years, having begun as a vendor relationship and transitioned into a collaborative partnership. Together, they’ve reinvented writing instruction for the AI era, and Turnitin is a trusted part of O’Fallon’s long-term academic strategy. O’Fallon even played a part in Turnitin Clarity’s development, providing insights from decades of writing instruction that helped shape the product. The school is one of numerous educational institutions around the world that helped ensure Turnitin Clarity was designed with teachers, not just for them.

“We are very blessed to work alongside a company like Turnitin. They truly listen to us, not just as customers but as educators working with students in the classrooms,” Jennifer says. “Without Turnitin Clarity, you’re missing an entire piece of the composition process. We would be greatly disadvantaged if we didn’t have that window into a student’s process.”

Sarah recommends Turnitin Clarity to any school looking to bridge the gap between teachers and their students. “Turnitin Clarity gives teachers assurance that students are thinking for themselves and doing their own work. It preserves your relationships and ensures your time is spent grading what students actually wrote.”
