Turnitin welcomes new General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hazel-Ann Mayers

Hazel-Ann Mayers brings two decades of corporate legal leadership from CBS, Simon & Schuster, and Viacom and an adjunct professorship to Turnitin

Oakland, Calif.

Leading education technology company Turnitin welcomes Hazel-Ann Mayers as its new General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Hazel’s role at Turnitin is especially timely as the company undergoes significant growth in product demand, acquisitions, and continued global expansion.

Hazel holds over two decades of corporate legal leadership at top global media companies CBS, Simon & Schuster, and Viacom. Most recently, she served as Executive Vice President, Chief Business Ethics and Compliance Officer at CBS Corporation (now ViacomCBS).

Her strategic approach to and successes in high-profile matters have been recognized by the Corporate Counsel National Women in Law Thought Leader Award, Crain's inaugural 100 Leading Women Lawyers in New York City, Legal 500 General Counsel, and the City College of New York Townsend Harris Alumni Medal, to name a few.

Earning her J.D. from Harvard University and B.A. in Pre-Law from City College of New York, Hazel is a product of the New York City public education system and gives back to the next generation of leaders and lawyers by volunteering in her community. Further, she serves as a fellow for the American Bar Foundation and advisory board member for the Women In Law Empowerment Forum and the Foundation for the City College of New York. She was also formerly the Vice President of the New York City Bar Justice Center and alumni representative on the City College of New York Presidential Selection Committee.

Hazel is currently an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University Law School in New York, instructing a new course called ‘The Role of General Counsel: Counselor, Strategist and Manager’. She will continue her service in academia while assuming her new role at Turnitin.

“Hazel has very deep experience and expertise in leading global legal teams and businesses through industry change and organizational transformation, incredibly relevant to Turnitin today,” says Turnitin CEO Chris Caren. “In addition to her accolades and impressive legal career, Hazel has the perspective of an educator as well as a passion for improving learning and protecting the integrity of education internationally—a clear alignment to our mission. We are immensely lucky that Hazel has chosen to bring her expertise to the Turnitin team.”

“Throughout my career, I have made the success of students and women a priority: mentoring others, volunteering, and serving in a variety of advisory roles for academic institutions,” says Turnitin’ s new General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hazel-Ann Mayers. “My role at Turnitin allows me to dedicate even more time and effort to this work, directly impacting students—including future lawyers—and educators. I am honored to be able to contribute to the advancement of education globally.”
